About

Dr. James Stoxen, DC, FSSEMM (hon)

Dr. James Stoxen, DC, FSSEMM (hon) FWSSEM, is the president of Team

Doctors®, Chicago, Illinois, one of the most recognized treatment

centers in the world.

Dr. Stoxen is a much sought-after speaker by medical societies

around the world. He has given over 1000 live presentations on health awareness topics. He has been asked to give scientific presentations at more than 65 medical conferences addressing an estimate of more than 50,000 medical doctors and scientists in Australia, Brazil, China, Columbia, Germany, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Monaco, Portugal, Russia, Scotland, South Africa, Thailand, UAE, the UK, and throughout the United States.

In 1986, he started his medical professional career early, becoming a licensed chiropractic physician at the age of 24. Also in 1986 a top powerlifter asked Dr Stoxen to prepare him for national and world championship competitions. This was the early stages of the development of the component of the human spring approach with the goal of improving athletes performance. The approach functioned magnificently to reduce the risk of injuries by the earliest detection, intervention and prevention of abnormal spring stiffness. During the time Stoxen was assigned as Ed Coan’s personal chiropractor, he competed injury-free and went on to break 71 world powerlifting records. Now, Ed Coan is considered a legend and the greatest powerlifter of all time.

At 25, James was appointed by the American Powerlifting Federation to be the USA’s national team doctor. As the national team doctor he was responsible for the examination and treatment of the Federation’s top athletes at all national and world championships. Dr Stoxen used the spring biomechanics approach to examining these elite athletes to determine the cause of abnormal shoulder and neck conditions. He found that many of these athlete’s conditions were related to an elevated first rib. This experience is what led to his expertise in treating patients with thoracic outlet syndrome.

In 1989, at the age of 27, in conjunction the USSR State Committee of Physical Culture and Sport; and the State Central Order of Lenin Institute of Physical Culture, Moscow USSR, Dr Stoxen organized the historic, first, international course in sports medicine at the National Institute of Physical Culture and Sports Sciences in Moscow, USSR. This is where he was introduced to the founder of modern plyometrics, professor, Yuri Verkhoshansky.

It was through the study of Verkhoshansky’s plyometric principles that Stoxen realized that doctors were studying, examining, treating, and advising patients based on a 340-year-old, outdated and flawed model of human movement: the inverted pendulum model. In the early 1990’s, he began theorizing the newest model of human movement: The Integrated Spring-Mass Model. The Integrated Spring-Mass Model is an advancement of the Spring-Mass Model proposed by Harvard University research scientists in 1989. The Integrated Spring-Mass Model and Human Spring examination and treatment approach helped Dr. Stoxen achieve worldwide recognition and praise as a health and fitness expert, thought leader in the medical field.

The integrated spring-mass model explains magnificently, how the body moves, absorbs collisions and recycles energy. It also explains how it engineers and maintains joint spaces. The most important application of the human spring model is how the body engineers open spaces and tunnels for the safe passage of blood vessels and nerves through the thoracic outlet and tunnel.

From 1986 – 1992 Dr Stoxen worked on athletes at over 60 national and world championships. It became his testing ground to test the Human Spring Approach on elite athletes. It is estimated that he has treated more than 500 national and world champions at over 75 national and world championships.

In 1991, seeing the importance of specialized active rehabilitation and training to strengthen the bodies spring system he designed and built one of the first active rehabilitation training centers in the world. From 1991 – 1993, Dr Stoxen’s sports medicine center grew from 500 new patients per year to 5,000 new patients per year requiring the addition of 9 chiropractors, two medical doctors and two physical therapists to handle the growing practice. At that time he had the number one and number two largest chiropractic centers in the world.

In 1993, Joe Weider, the co-founder of the International Federation of Body Builders and publisher of Muscle and Fitness, Shape and Mens Fitness personally appointed Dr Stoxen to the prestigious editorial advisory board for Muscle and Fitness. In 2008 he was inducted into the National Fitness Hall of Fame. In 2012, he was inducted into the Personal Trainers Hall of Fame. He was also appointed to serve on the prestigious, Global Advisory Board, of The International Sports Hall of Fame.

About Dr James Stoxen

In 2002, Dr. Robert Goldman, the founder of the National Academy of Sports Medicine and the American Academy of Anti-aging Medicine, experienced a herniated disc injury that was so severe his leg was paralyzed with a drop foot he knew would not improve without surgery. He also had a severe TOS that was so bad that his chest and arm had severely atrophied. After being treated successfully to full recovery, Dr. Goldman stated, “In my 25 years organizing medical and fitness certification courses, I’ve seen everything. I have never seen anything like this before.” Goldman promptly put Stoxen on the international lecture circuit to teach doctors and scientists this new model and approach.

In 2004, Anthony Field of kids’ music group The Wiggles, described being frequently gripped by anxiety, sadness, and negativity and described being suicidal” due to his widespread chronic pain and food sensitivities. Despite their great success in the U.K. and North America Field’s serious medical issues, worsened by a heavy tour schedule, caused him to consider quitting or reinventing The Wiggles.

Field met Dr. Stoxen in 2004 and was treated with the Human Spring Approach, made a remarkably fast recovery and has been able to continue. In 2012, Field published his book, How I Got My Wiggle Back where he claims Stoxen’s human spring approach saved his career and saved his life He and the Wiggles still perform today.

Anthony Field is not the only celebrity to praise Dr. Stoxen’s approach. Since 2002 he has been hired by over 130 national tours of top entertainers. It is estimated he has been asked to treat over 1000 celebrity entertainers and their handlers. The full list of tours can be found at on pages 485 - 486.

In 2014, at the World Congress of Sports and Exercise Medicine, Dr Stoxen gave the lecture “Ways physicians can improve athletes human performance by the earliest detection, intervention and prevention of spring stiffness over modulation”. In this lecture he formally introduced the Integrated Spring-Mass Model to hundreds of elite level sports medicine physicians from over 30 nations. This international committee of medical doctors recommended he be given a special award. In 2015, he was awarded an honorary fellowship by a member of the royal family, the Sultan of Pahang, for his distinguished research and contributions to the advancement of medical science in the areas of sports and exercise medicine at an international level Dr. Stoxen is currently rewriting the medical books to educate doctors on his more advanced approach to examining and treating patients, the Integrated Spring Mass Model. He is also writing a volume of books for patients on the Human Spring Model so they can make better decisions on what is the best approach to the treatment and prevention of many common conditions. Its called the “Human Spring” book series and it will focus on more effective ways to examine and treat patients with herniated discs, chronic arthritis, chronic fatigue, and many other health issues by restoring the bodies spring mechanism.

He is also rewriting the sports training technique books to incorporate the Human Spring Approach to developing a stronger spring system for improved running, distance running, sprinting, and plyometric training. He is also writing a book series on how to perform better in sports, such as boxing and martial arts, golf, baseball, hockey, and others.

In his first book, Neck Pain, Back Pain and Shoulder Pain ... Could It Be Thoracic Outlet Syndrome?

Dr. Stoxen explains how to use his Human Spring Model to better examine and treat Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS). TOS is one of the most overlooked, misdiagnosed, and mistreated disorders in modern medicine. Active people at all levels, from world-class athletes to weekend warriors, suffer from this painful and debilitating disorder and often endure medical treatments that do little to cure it and sometimes make it worse.

Dr. Stoxen suffered from TOS for seven painful years. He saw dozens of doctors who did the standard- of-care approach on him. After exhaustive research and hundreds of interview encounters with top sports coaches, athletes, engineers, and physicists, he finally figured out why his body was not healing:

the thoracic outlet remains open with spring mechanics. The dozens of doctors did the standard of care treatment by treating my thoracic outlet syndrome by treating it as a lever mechanism when it was actually designed as a spring mechanism. Once he applied the human spring principles outlined in this book, he immediately recovered to 100% and has not had the TOS ever since.

In the last 15 years he has taken time away from his busy practice to travel great distances to give workshops, plenary and keynote presentations, teaching doctors the how to examine, treat and prevent thoracic outlet syndrome. Recognized worldwide as an expert in this disorder, he has already been invited to lecture at over 20 medical conferences in Japan, Italy, Malaysia, Thailand, China, Spain, India, Scotland, the Netherlands, England, UAE, and throughout the United States. No other doctor in the world has lectured at more medical conferences on TOS than Dr. Stoxen.

Besides writing this comprehensive book on TOS, he developed the www.thoracicoutletsyndrome.com blog. In this blog there are many articles and video tutorials to educate readers on TOS. Here they can better determine if they have TOS, the cause and the best approach to treating and preventing it. He also has articles and video tutorials demonstrating how he reversed his own TOS with self- care, exercises, and stretches. The blog provides the fastest way to present the latest research on TOS as it comes fresh from the scientific journals. The science is translated in a language that the patient can understand.
